Barbie (2023) is a comedy/fantasy film that is directed by Greta Gerwig and stars Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling!
The movie is essentially about all the Barbie’s and Ken’s living the perfect life in Barbieland. One day stereotypical Barbie (Margot Robbie) loses her ability to wear heels! And her perfect day every day doesn’t go as perfect. Scared, she goes to Weird Barbie to find out what’s going on, and she finds out she has to go to the real world and find the person who is playing with her. On her way to the real world, Ken follows along and they find out all the hardships of the real world and who they are.
!!SPOILER ALERT!!
I personally think the movie was great! The cinematography was mesmerizing. The different shades of pink were nice and the actors were surprisingly great for a movie like this. Although I was surprised at all the innuendos because I was expecting it to be a little kid’s movie, but the rating is PG-13. The movie does a semi-good job of portraying patriarchy and how the world is dominated by men, and females don’t really get a say in things. There’s a scene where a worker from Mattel is talking about all the hardships women face in the world which ultimately ends the patriarchy in Barbieland.
The movie also discusses motherhood a bit which is what made some people ultimately cry. The movie also discusses identity issues mainly with Ken because he feels he has no purpose and he doesn’t do anything besides play ‘beach’, but Barbie helps him find out he’s enough and has purpose which some people can relate to and they do it in an entertaining way! Also, I like how Barbieland is so colorful and pink, but the real world is more greyish and gloomy and overall not as vibrant. Overall, the movie was great and I would definitely give it 7.5/10!
